Well, we have all heard of Winston Churchill’s famous line about democracy that has been altered to “Capitalism is the worst economic system, except for all the others that have been tried”. America is exceptional!! Beyond being just an experiment in democracy that constantly drifts in various directions, clearly, our economic system is subject to the same whims of drifting. I believe that America has finally ‘woke’ to the delusional attempts to sell us on capitalism as directed by others, whether it be regulators determining the best in our lives, governments giving us an abundance of new laws, judiciary enforcing lawfare, etc. Finally, we seem to have clear eyes and a more determined direction. Over most of the last 20 years, we have been willing to devour our previous market successes through useless imposed burdens.
Directed Capitalism vs. Enabling Capitalism
Call it ‘directed capitalism’ where some official somewhere is trying to tell us by some official notice the direction that the people (the market) must go. If at first we don’t follow, they turn up the pressure with Phase 2 or Phase 3, and hang guilt on us if we are not compliant.
“Enabling capitalism” is a totally different experience within the same economic system. This begins when the government is already too big; but, instead of abusing its bigness and while it tries to shrink, it begins assisting with connecting the dots of economic growth through introductions, proper well-timed suggestions, removing restraining economic handcuffs, etc.
Examples in Everyday Life
A couple of “directed capitalistic” examples that you might have personally experienced:
- Buying a new washing machine that does not wash but certainly saves water;
- Dishwashers that almost get your dishes clean thus leaving contaminants that are clearly problematic;
- Programmed cars that turn off your engine anytime you are stopped at a red light, thus creating a fear of pulling out timely and causing a wreck;
- EV subsidies that the rest of us donated through our taxes.
As you know, the list goes on forever.
The Bigger Picture
Yes, the Big Beautiful Bill did so much to enable the US to be the “market force” we know as a free society we should be! This is life, and things do happen like government shutdowns, extremely uneasy but motivating tariffs, and many more soon to be discovered.
The Road Ahead
I’ve been saying since August 2024, “This will be America’s best 12 years of economic achievement in the last 100!” Enjoy!
Onward and upward!
